How long have you been coming to class and what’s the one thing about Boot Camp that keeps you coming back?
I've been coming to Boot Camp for almost 9 years. The thing that keeps me coming back is the diversity of the workouts. I like the fact that there are always different muscle groups that are hit (depending on the exercises), coupled with the fact that some classes have more cardio, while others are more strength related. You never know what you're going to get, which is what makes it so great. Unless we're doing excessive shuttle runs, in which case the class is horrible, LOL.
You’re one of the most consistent campers as far as attendance, which sets a great example. What is it that gets you out of bed in the morning, and what has inspired your extra classes the past few months?
I look forward to starting my day off with an invigorating workout that I know will set the pace for the rest of my day. I find working out in the morning much more impactful and beneficial than working out later in the day. Coming out of 2022, I noticed my workout drive had diminished somewhat and my waistline increasing, so I decided to double down and start attending more classes. While I enjoy working out at my home gym on my own, it's not as motivating than when you're in person at the Parish House or live on a Zoom class. Taking the extra recorded Zoom classes (and having them available) just provides extra motivation.
Why Jeff’s Boot Camp instead of going to the gym or another group class?
I enjoy going to Jeff Boot Camp for a variety of reasons (as opposed to going to a gym or just always working out at home at my own). First there's the diversification in the workouts. There really aren't any instances I can recall where I was done with one of Jeff's classes and didn't feel I got a great workout. Second is the camaraderie of the group. Many of the "campers" have been going for years, so there's a great sense of familiarity and a certain degree of competition we all have with one another, which is great as it pushes us all to work harder.
Any current or long-term goals with class or your fitness in general?
Yes. I've always strived to be in shape and be fit. Now that I'm 50, I don't need to have six pack abs or anything like that, but I want to continue to be healthy and fit so I can look good and feel good on a year round basis (not just when pool / beach season is here , haha).
What would you say to someone who is considering joining the class but is nervous or unsure about joining?
There is absolutely no need to be nervous whatsoever. The classes are challenging but highly doable, regardless of your fitness level. Jeff provides modifiers to exercises so that everyone can get in a great workout and when attending the classes in person, the individuals in any of the classes are extremely friendly and welcoming to any newcomers.
Any last words on working out, fitness, or just motivation in general?
I've been working out in one way or another since I was 14 years old. While the nature of my workouts have modified over the years (gone are the days where I throw around very heavy weights or try to max out on the bench press), my goals of being fit, healthy and in shape are stronger than they've ever been. The combination of Jeff's Boot Camp and my own workouts keep my highly motivated week in and week out. Incorporating high intensity cardio with functional weight training is key as we get older, in order to minimize stress on the body and joints, while maximizing fitness goals.
